Caravan fan completes 5,000-mile tour of UK campsites

A remarkable explorer has shown exactly what can be achieved by those who own a touring caravan and have access to UK campsites.

Rachel Kershaw has completed a 70-day road trip around the country as part of the Fan in a Van campaign devised by VisitEngland, reports the Caravan Times. Her mission was to raise the profile of some of the UK's most famous tourist destinations.

She left Land's End in Cornwall in her touring caravan in May and went on to stay at a total of 48 UK campsites. Eventually, she pitched up in London on July 27th to bring her journey to an end.

In the process, Ms Kershaw drove more than 5,000 miles in a bid to uncover every inch of beauty and culture the country has to offer. Her trip might provide inspiration to those who are thinking of investing in a touring caravan and heading for regular UK breaks, as they now know what is available to them.

"I've always loved England, but it's got so much more to offer than I realised before embarking on this trip. I've travelled from north to south, east to west and have been welcomed warmly all along the way," Ms Kershaw stated.

Her route is said to have taken in coastal resorts, heritage sites, rolling hills and city lights, while she also tucked in to a huge range of traditional English dishes and visited several wildlife reserves and nature spots.

She is now adamant that plenty of other people should follow her example and get outdoors in England in order to enjoy everything it has to offer.

Perhaps the best way is to splash out on a touring caravan with all the latest mod-cons and get plenty of stays at UK campsites into the diary as soon as possible.

Explore 'gold medal county' on holidays in Yorkshire

People who book holidays in Yorkshire will have the chance to visit the homes of some of Team GB's greatest Olympians.

Welcome to Yorkshire has published a new map to recognise the achievements of its athletes at London 2012, with several having already struck gold in their respective events.

Indeed, Yorkshire alone has more gold medals than a large number of countries, including Japan and Canada.

To mark the county's incredible achievement, the tourism body has published a map with details of its native heroes and where visitors can expect to find the gold postbox in their honour.

Among the highlights for those on holidays in Yorkshire will be the home of Jessica Ennis, cyclist Ed Clancy, rowers Katherine Copeland and Andy Triggs Hodge and triathlon star Alistair Brownlee, all of whom are from the county.

There are also details about Yorkshire's 37 athletes who have not yet secured a gold medal at the Games.

Park Resorts Launches its First Eco Caravan

The remarkable ABI Pure caravan offers customers a greener, friendlier holidaying option

Park Resorts, leading providers of UK caravan holidays, has teamed up with ABI to launch their first ever environmentally friendly caravan holiday home. The ABI Pure will become part of Park Resorts' caravan sales, available to buy across 39 coastal holiday parks in the UK from just £30,995.

The ABI Pure comes with added insulation in the walls, roof and floor to reduce energy loss. In addition, the eco caravan offers dual flush in the toilet cisterns to reduce water costs, low energy spotlights throughout, double glazing and central heating.

"No other operator is currently offering the ABI Pure and we have 40 on order, enabling us to offer our customers the opportunity to buy this unique eco caravan," Says Michael Clark, Sales and Operations Director at Park Resorts.

"We are constantly looking at ways of offering our customers greener options and the ABI Pure gives owners that flexibility. At Park Resorts, we feel that we have a responsibility to care for the planet."

The ABI Pure's energy efficient bulbs last several times longer than their inefficient counterparts and the dual-flush toilets save an average of 26 per cent more water than single-flush toilets. Thicker insulation helps to reduce the energy used to heat the caravan, lowers heating bills and with extra insulation in the roof reduces the hot air flowing out. The ABI Pure is available in two or three bed layouts.

Park Resorts offer caravan holidays and caravan ownership across the UK coastline, including in Essex, Yorkshire, Kent, Sussex and Scotland. Whether looking for a family, couple or large group of friends, there's the perfect caravan for everyone. Both caravans for sale and holiday accommodation (from bronze, silver and gold) are available to suit all age groups and price limits, with a real emphasis on catering for the family.

Touring caravan users urged to remind insurance firms of holidays

Heading out into the beautiful British countryside with a touring caravan this summer is sure to be a hugely popular and rewarding activity, but it does not come without some responsibilities.

Tim Shallcross, head of policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said it is vital that you alert your insurance provider of any trips you plan to take in a vehicle that is towing a caravan to UK campsites.

There are no shortcuts around this, as you might find your policy is invalid if you do not follow the correct guidelines. Insurance companies need to know about your touring caravan activities as they will look to ensure you have all the right mirrors on your car and an adequate towbar.

"It is also a very good idea to get the caravan itself insured. There is a registration scheme for caravans that has been in existence for some time now. Make sure the caravan that you’re buying is on that scheme, make sure that it is registered and registered with you being the keeper and take out insurance for the caravan itself," Mr Shallcross stated.

Once you have completed all the formalities and ensured your car and caravan are in the required condition to hit the road, you will be in a position to explore UK campsites in pursuit of a comfortable, fun and affordable break.

Of course, the advantage of owning a touring caravan is that you can take breaks whenever you wish, so holidays in Devon, Sussex, Yorkshire, Wales and a host of other destinations are available on tap. We are perhaps now at the time of the year when you will want to make use of that.

However, remember it is not worth risking a financial calamity by failing to ensure you have adequate cover in place for your mobile holiday home and the vehicle that is towing it.

Scotland holidays picked out as sailing dream

Sailing is an activity that you should try at least once in your life - and there is a good chance that once you have done so you will be desperate to hit the waves plenty more times.

Sailor John MacKay has been speaking about the pursuit and just how enjoyable can be. If he is to be believed, it seems you might be best booking a holiday in Scotland, as he suggested the west coast of the country is the finest place of all for the sport.

In particular, he picked out the Hebrides and Malin regions as the best of all, noting it is not difficult to charter a boat in either of these spots. All that you need is one person who has some sailing experience in order to take control and ensure safety regulations are met.
That alone is enough for at least half a dozen others to be able to enjoy themselves on board a yacht  on the ocean.

"You will have the time of your life. Sailing is just a fantastic thing to do. On the west coast there is so much happening - fabulous foods, castles, scenery - it is indescribable. It is just so beautiful," Mr MacKay stated.
Sailing has shot to prominence in the UK in recent days as Ben Ainslie won a gold medal in the sport at the Olympic Games. His success, making him the country's most successful sailor of all time, could persuade many of you to give it a try.

And if you decide to do just that, heading for holidays in Scotland is a great idea, as Mr MacKay suggested the area is one of the country's "hidden gems". Even if you find sailing is not to your liking there will be so much more on offer.

Explore England's Horrible Histories

England is a country world-renowned for its history. Our ancient lineage of Kings and Queens, revered historic architecture and deep-seated traditions bring visitors from near and far. But the country’s history is also peppered with tales of smuggling and witchcraft, piracy and ghostly hauntings, which lend a more sinister side to many of England’s popular destinations.

Have a look at some of the country’s darker tourist attractions:

On the trail of witches
2012 marks the 400th anniversary of the Lancashire Witch trials. In August 1612 ten people were executed on the moors above Lancaster, having been found guilty of witchcraft at Lancaster Castle. Today, visitors can take a guided tour of the imposing castle, the setting for the imprisonment and the trial. See the dungeons and the grand Jury Room and Courts and learn of the witches’ plight before making up your own mind. Were the Pendle Witches malevolent people possessed by supernatural powers, or innocent victims of a time obsessed with the pursuit and punishment of witchcraft?

Legend has it that during the Dark Ages, an old woman lived alone deep in the caverns of the Wookey caves in Somerset. She was branded a witch and all local mishaps and problems were blamed on her. Eventually, a Holy Clerk of Glastonbury exorcised the witch and turned her to stone. Her frozen figure remains in this cavern – known as The Witch’s Kitchen – to this day. Visit the Witch’s Castle and Kitchen in the Wookey Hole Caves and take your chances in the Magical Mirror Maze. You can also visit Wookey witch’s original skeleton, on display at Somerset’s Wells & Mendip Museum.

Down in the dungeons
The newly-opened Blackpool Tower Dungeons bring an interactive experience that tells some of the more gruesome tales from 1,000 years of Blackpool history. Discover the torture instruments of forgotten times, escape the mirror maze of horrors and get sentenced to death on the Extremis drop ride. The Blackpool Tower Dungeons are the latest to open of a dungeons series that includes York, Warwick Castle and London.

Nottingham’s Galleries of Justice tell some of the sinister stories behind the city’s own outlaws, which are brought to life in the very building where they were judged, imprisoned and executed. The setting for this historic visitor attraction is Nottingham’s old courthouse and gaol, voted ‘the most haunted building in the UK’ by paranormal investigators Fright Nights. Take a Ghost Tour to hear tales of the Shire Hall’s dark and sinister past and be led around the haunted corridors, cells and dungeons.

Who dunnit?
2013 marks 125 years since the streets of East London were at the mercy of Jack the Ripper, the unidentified serial killer whose legend remains a subject of fascination. Visitors with a brave disposition can try a Jack the Ripper walking tour of Spitalfields and Petticoat Lane in East London. Inspect the murder sites, sift through the gory evidence and get to grips with the main suspects. After the tour, you can steady your nerves in The Ten Bells, the pub where the victims themselves - perhaps under the threatening gaze of the Ripper himself – sought solace from the waking nightmare.

Step back in time on a journey from London on a Murder Mystery tour aboard the impeccably restored carriages of the British Pullman. The year is 1933 and there has been a murder on the train. Love and intrigue are in the air as you meet a series of suspicious characters all embroiled in the plot. Travel through the beautiful Kent countryside and indulge in a five course lunch as you pull together clues to solve the murder.

Do you believe in ghosts?
The historic city of Chester is a ghosthunter's heaven. Join a night-time ghost hunt around the eerie haunts of the city’s mysterious and murky past. Tour the ancient, walled city after dark, visit well-known spooky and scary places, and hear spine-chilling tales of ghosts, spectres, and things that go bump in the night.

The renowned York Ghost Walk Experience tour winds through the city’s honeycomb maze of ancient buildings, narrow cobbled streets and dark alleyways. The after-dark experience combines storytelling from those in the know with authentic re-enactments of characters such as York’s Headless Earl and The Gray Lady. The latter is the much-seen ghost of a nun buried alive in the old Hospital of St Leonard – now part of the Georgian Theatre Royal. But beware – the city of York is a ghostly one. Even if you don’t meet the city’s spectres, they will almost certainly be watching you.

Brits Head for UK Coast

Brits Head for UK Coast as Beach Summer Breaks Boom.

According to statistics released by Owners Direct, breaks at the British seaside are becoming increasingly popular among British holidaymakers.

Despite April to June this year being the wettest on record, it seems Brits aren’t put off from holidaying at home.

Based on an analysis of top enquiries to the holiday home rental site, Owners Direct, there has been a sharp increase in tourist hot spots at home.

Families are heading for popular UK beach destinations such as St. Ives and Newquay in Cornwall which have both seen a big rise in enquiries.

In the lead up to the summer, Owners Direct has also seen a significant increase in the number of enquiries for holidays in the Peak District.

It seems the UK weather hasn’t dampened anyone’s enthusiasm for a traditional British summer break.

August bumper month as over 10 million Brits plan holiday at home.

UK Holiday operators set for bumper month as over 10 million Brits plan holiday at home.

More than 10 million Brits – 21 per cent of the adult population – plan to make the most of the summer by taking at least one holiday or short break in the UK, with 8.9 million of those planning to take the trip in England.

These are the findings of VisitEngland’s Summer Trip Tracker, which also discovered that the ‘staycations’ are likely to generate £2.3bn in tourism spend for the UK economy.

Around 10.8 million Brits are currently ‘undecided’ about taking a trip away during the summer, with concerns around their financial situation (39 per cent of this group) and the weather (28 per cent) being the main drivers of doubt. Twenty-two per cent are waiting to see if there are special offers or deals to take advantage of over the summer period.

“I’m delighted to see that over 10 million people are planning to holiday at home this summer,” said James Berresford, VisitEngland’s chief executive. “The industry has a vast opportunity to inspire those still undecided and convince them that England is the place to be this summer.

“If we convert even half of those who are undecided about taking a summer break in England, we could potentially contribute an additional £600m to the UK economy. The trend for last-minute bookings is strong, this coupled with the recent return of sunshine to our shores could provide the industry with a welcome boost.”

VisitEngland also revealed that Brits are fully in the Olympic spirit with 10.8 million Brits having attended the Torch Relay or torch relay event. Six per cent say they have tickets to the Olympics, while another 6 per cent are hoping to go to free events in London to soak up the atmosphere during Games time.

Holidaymakers Searching for Holidays in UK

Despite many British travellers flocking to warmer climates to escape the UK’s prolonged run of bad weather, there has also been a reported increase in the number of searches being made for UK holiday cottages.

Independent Cottages, an online holiday cottage directory in theUK, has reported an 18 percent rise in online searches during June 2012, when compared to the same period in 2011.

A spokesperson for Independent Cottages, said, ‘Given how awful the weather has been I would have expected traffic to drop not increase.’

Another survey by the same company also indicates a rise in the percentage of people holidaying inside the UK, mostly due to the affordability of the holidays on offer, with holiday cottages considered to be quality accommodation at reasonable prices.

However, holidaying in London during the 2012 Olympic Games may prove to be expensive, as suggested by a recent survey conducted by M&S Money. The study highlighted that a beach holiday abroad is more financially viable than staying in London during the first week of the 2012 Games, with a saving of around 25 percent.

Jane Lawson, the head of travel money at M&S Money, said, ‘Staycations are clearly popular this year, particularly as people look forward to celebrating the Jubilee and Olympics, in what will be a British summer to remember. However, with the cost of activities and eating out in theUKrelatively high, and favourable foreign exchange rates helping to make your money go further abroad, a holiday at home is not always the most affordable option.

To get the most from your holiday budget, no matter what the destination, it’s important to plan ahead. As well as looking for good deals on travel and accommodation, thinking about exchange rates, local costs and the kind of extras you will need to spend your money on will help to ensure you have the best possible holiday experience.’

When are they going back to school again?

Parents in the UK will spend a staggering £2,474 on childcare and entertainment this summer, according to a new study.

The overall cost of the school holidays includes an average spend of £351 on childcare, £504 on days out and £665 on additional transport and food.

Researchers also found that the financial and emotional effect of the summer break is giving 73 per cent of parents sleepless nights as they worry over how to keep their children occupied over 42 days.

The ‘School’s Out’ study by budget hotel chain Travelodge, which surveyed 5,000 British parents, revealed that the US trend of coupon collecting has become increasingly popular in the UK, with a third of British parents devoting between two to three hours each week voucher-hunting to save on household costs.

The report also found that 17 per cent of parents with children under 18 will not be taking a holiday this year, while 53 per cent of those who are taking a break are planning to stay in the UK.

And the impact of the recession was clear, with less than a third of parents able to afford to take more than one break a year.

Meanwhile reservations data from Travelodge has revealed that a new staycation trend has emerged - the revival of British road trips.

'We’re calling it "hotel hopping". People are visiting two or three destinations in a week rather than staying at just one,' said Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed.

'Families might stop off at Eastbourne, Brighton and Bognor Regis exploring the Sussex coast, for example.
'It’s a great example of the British ability to make the best of making do – one holiday suddenly feels like more.'

The report also revealed that coastal destinations top the staycation list with 46 per cent of families heading to the sea-side this summer.

Cornwall, Edinburgh, Lake District, Devon and Blackpool were the most popular destinations for families.
However families viewed the unpredictable weather as the most significant disadvantage of staying in the UK, with 81 per cent of parents admitting that their school holiday budgets could be blown if the wet summer continues.

'Parents told us that entertaining children on rainy days is £53 more expensive than on dry days,' Shakila added. 'More rain could really put the Wellington boot into already cash-strapped parent’s budgets.

'Going to the beach and having picnics were two of the top three activities mums and dads have planned for their kids – both low cost but heavily reliant on clear skies.

'Despite aiming to spend an average of £150 less this summer than last, parents are now bracing themselves to spend hundreds of pounds more, if the weather doesn’t improve for the duration.'
NETMUMS founder Siobhan Freegard also states that a washout summer would have a major financial impact on families this season.

'Summer can be tough for families who are already struggling, as the holidays mean increased food and childcare bills, so less to spend on short breaks and days out,' she said.

'When it's sunny there are lots of options for free activities, such as outdoor treasure hunts or picnics in the park. But rainy days are harder to manage as kids are often full of energy but cooped up in the house.
'You can't beat the British weather so why not make a virtue of it? Wrap up the children in wellies and waterproofs and go puddle jumping or try a nature walk in the rain spotting snails and slugs?

'If you are stuck for indoor inspiration, think back to your youth – a pack of cards, marbles, torches in the bedroom, cardboard box robots - the things you loved as a child can all be re-introduced for the new generation.

'While getting creative takes more time to plan than a trip to a pricey theme park, it makes memories your children will treasure forever. All the research shows children want time with their parent’s more than expensive days out.'

Working parents will be taking an average 12 days off during the summer holidays according to the survey, with fifty two per cent of working parents reporting difficulties getting time off during the school holidays due to competition with colleagues who also have children and co-workers who don’t have children and don’t understand the practicalities of school holidays.

A quarter of parents felt that summer school holidays should be reduced as they found it too expensive to keep children entertained for over six weeks.

Wave Hotel: Butlins waves goodbye to the hi-de-h

The brainchild of Billy Butlin, these resorts were set up 76 years ago with the tag line that the working man should be able to have "one week’s holiday for one week’s pay". On the back of the 1938 Holiday Pay Act, which gave blue-collar workers their first paid breaks, the concept quickly caught on and in its heyday there were 10 resorts across Britain and Ireland (and one in the Bahamas) filled with family huts, knotted handkerchiefs on heads and organised fun. But as holiday companies took the all-inclusive idea to the Costas in the Eighties, with the guarantee of sunshine, Billy’s baby hit the buffers. Today, just three resorts remain – Minehead, Skegness and Bognor Regis.

Swallowed up by Bourne Leisure in 2000, the resorts have been quietly bringing themselves into the 21st century, at a cost of £125million. including the Wave, the newest of three new hotels on the Bognor Regis Resort.

Butlins offer several levels of accommodation, ranging from the basic Silver Apartments in the older buildings to the higher-end Ocean Hotel and the Wave There can be a huge difference between the cheapest rooms – £300 for a family of four for a three-night break, without food – and the most expensive, £1,330 including all meals.

It is the all-inclusive aspect that is so appealing, the idea that you don’t have to think and frantically plan for how to entertain your little darlings. Most costs are known and most of the thinking has been done for you. Much like a cruise, in fact. All-inclusive resorts like this will never replace the sort of holidays that are considered more middle class, involving quaint b&bs, secluded locations, grand country house hotels, idyllic scenery, cultural trails and adventurous activities. But they can sit quite comfortably together, though.

England's longest zip wire to open at the Eden Project

The longest zip wire in England – measuring 660 metres – has been unveiled at the Eden Project.

Visitors to the popular Cornish attraction, which is best known for its giant “biomes” that house a variety of exotic plants, will be able to ride the zip wire from Saturday.

They must pay £5 in addition to their general admission ticket, while those not wishing to explore the rest of the site must pay £10 to ride the zip wire, which crosses the entire 35-acre site. The ride lasts around a minute.

Gaynor Coley, the Eden Project’s chief executive, was one of the first to use it during an inauguration ceremony today. She was joined by circus performer Marco Fiera, who took to the zip wire on a Penny Farthing bicycle.

Riders must weigh between 40kg and 120kg, and must be at least 1m20 in height. Those under the age of 14 must be accompanied by someone over the age of 16, and those under the age of 18 require parental permission. See www.edenproject.com for more information.

The longest zip wire in Britain was previously found at Adrenaline Quarry, also in Cornwall, and measures 490m in length.

Meanwhile, a temporary zip wire is due to open at Wembley Stadium next month. The 200-metre wire will be open from August 16-22. See www.wembleystadium.com/tours

Cornwall named top holiday spot for over 50s

Cornwall has been named the top UK holiday destination for those aged 50 and over in the 50+ Awards 2012.

Fighting off competition from York and London, who took second and third place respectively, the Duchy was applauded for its variety of gardens, walks and scenic spots.

Organised and presented by the 50+ Show, the awards showcase the best that life has to offer for those who have celebrated their mid-centenarian year and cover everything from best health product to best personality across 53 categories.

Malcolm Bell, head of VisitCornwall, collected the award at the inaugural 50+ Awards Gala Reception in London.

He said: "The grey pound is vitally important to Cornwall as with 41% of our visitors aged 55 plus they could be considered our core market.

"To our benefit they are flexible in visiting times and most likely to visit during the autumn and winter which supports the development of a year-round visitor economy. This award shows that we are keeping this important visitor base happy and will help to attract new visitors."

The Award winners were decided through online nominations and votes by those aged over 50. In total 211,465 votes were cast and the Best UK Destination was among the top 20 most voted for categories.

Enjoy "beautiful" English countryside on UK breaks

Britons who take UK breaks have been urged to dedicate more of their time to exploring and enjoying the magnificent countryside that can be found across so much of the country.

Expert psychologist Dr David Lewis has spoken about exactly what the English countryside has to offer and he suggested it is a shame that many people do not spend more time there. Indeed, it is not uncommon for people to take holidays in Devon, Sussex, Northumberland and other spots with a huge amount of scenic green spaces and fail to make the most of it.

He said he believes rural parts of the UK are "neglected", despite the fact there is clearly "so much the country has to offer".

"I think it would be nice if people explore some of the things that the English countryside has got to offer. There are so many beautiful places around of which we know very little about," Dr Lewis explained.

Spending time in the countryside is not all about taking in the fresh air and amazing panoramas. In fact, trips to green locations can be packed with activities, such as hiking, cycling, rafting, climbing and orienteering.
The countryside certainly has all the credentials to make for a wonderful UK holiday and should be discovered in more detail by many of the tourists who take trips to it.

Britons who are planning to enjoy a vacation in the country this summer might be wise to include a visit to one of the country's national parks in their itinerary. Spots such as Devon boast two national parks - Exmoor and Dartmoor - while other places such as Yorkshire offer easy access to several.

Walkers could be wise to prioritise a holiday in Sussex, home to the popular South Downs Way. The 100-mile route through the Hampshire and Sussex countryside can be completed over several days and allows people to enjoy an authentic experience of life in this part of the world.

London 2012 Olympics journey planner

Transport for London will operate a range of new social media platforms to assist and inform commuters before and during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

With approximately one million more people than usual expected to be in the capital during the forthcoming Olympic Games, London commuters and incoming visitors are being warned that the city’s transport network will be under unprecedented strain. Today TfL has announced the full list of social media platforms and planning tools it is making available to those who will be travelling through the city during Games time.

In addition to TfL’s permanent Twitter account (@TfLOfficial) a number of Transport for London Twitter accounts will be providing additional advice on how services and roads are operating during the Games period. They are @TfLTrafficNews, @TfLTraveAlerts and @GAOTG. Individual Twitter accounts also exist for each of London Underground’s Tube lines, the DLR, London Overground and the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme. You can find a complete list of TfL’s Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts here.

Transport for London is warning commuters that each day of the Games will be different, with certain stations and interchanges set to be exceptionally busy when important events are held nearby. The website www.getaheadofthegames.com has been set up to give commuters notice of how busy their journeys are likely to be and is recommended reading for travellers looking to plan their journeys through London in advance of their arrival. Already the service has been used by 1.5 million people. Londoners will also be able to sign up for email alerts to help them plan their commute during the Games at www.tfl.gov.uk/gamesemails while ticket holders are advised to use the Spectator Journey Planner to plan their journey to Olympics venues. Wi-Fi is now available in a number of London Tube stations and will be complimentary during the Games period so commuters will be able to access updates on the move.

The social media accounts and travel mailing lists introduced by TfL are supplemented by a number of other online travel platforms. This week Concentra launched an interactive graphic detailing which Tube stations are likely to face the most severe disruptions on any given day of the Olympics; Google maps, meanwhile, is now offering cycling directions which should be of use to Londoners who are planning on cycling to work during the Games.

Millions due to holiday overseas during Olympics

Rain at home and the weak euro is scuppering the Government's "staycation" drive.

Millions of British holidaymakers are expected to escape the country during the Olympics, despite the best efforts of the Government and the sponsors of London 2012 to persuade more people to take a holiday at home.

VisitEngland’s “staycation” campaign, which featured celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Julie Walters and Rupert Grint, each extolling the virtues of a domestic holiday, angered tour operators earlier this year.

Meanwhile, British Airways – the official airline partner of the Games – was criticised this week for running a marketing campaign declaring: “Don’t fly. Support Team GB.”

But research by tour operators and travel agents has revealed that the campaigns have not had a significant impact on Britons’ travel habits.

Instead, recent wet weather, concerns over high hotel prices in London during the Olympics, and the continuing strength of sterling against the euro – one pound currently buys more than €1.20, up by around 10 per cent compared with last summer – appear to have encouraged many Britons to head overseas between July 27 and August 12.

Lastminute.com, the online travel agent, said bookings for holidays during those dates were up by 207 per cent on last year, while a survey carried out by Amadeus – a travel technology provider – suggested that one in five British adults will be taking an overseas holiday during the Games.

“While the Olympics undoubtedly presents a very exciting prospect for a lot of people, our survey shows that there are also plenty who are looking to get away,” said Diane Bouzebiba, managing director of Amadeus.

Research by Abta, the travel association, supported the findings, while a recent survey conducted by Travelzoo – the holiday offers website – suggested that 30 per cent of Britons would be heading abroad during the Olympics.

The survey found that travellers appeared particularly keen to take advantage of the weak euro, with the most popular destinations proving to be the Mediterranean favourites of Spain and Greece.

Joel Brandon-Bravo, Travelzoo’s UK managing director, said that flight prices were higher than they would normally be in late July and early August, but said this had encouraged hoteliers to cut their rates. He added that some of the best deals could be found in Turkey and the Balearics, with some packages discounted by up to 65 per cent.

Britain’s two biggest tour operators, Thomas Cook and TUI UK & Ireland, the parent company of Thomson and First Choice, confirmed that the Games had not had a negative impact on bookings. Both companies said bookings to Egypt and Tunisia were once again strong , despite recent unrest.

Motoring costs rise on the Continent

Motoring costs rise on the Continent.

Fuel prices have risen steeply in destinations popular with British visitors, a survey has found.

British holidaymakers planning on taking their cars to Europe this summer can expect increased costs after a survey found that fuel pump prices have risen sharply in some of the most popular destinations.

Since 2007, the cost of a litre of fuel has increased by up to 82 per cent on the Continent, with Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland now offering the worst value for motorists, according to research conducted by the Post Office.

Motorists can now expect to pay £1.37 a litre, up 82 per cent on 2007, in Switzerland, while the popular destinations of France, Spain and Italy have seen increases of around 60 per cent over the five-year period.
Italy and France also offer the worst value for drivers of unleaded cars, at £1.67 and £1.48 per litre respectively.

According to the survey, British holidaymakers remain undeterred, with only eight per cent of respondents saying the high fuel prices would put them off taking their car to Europe.

However, the strength of sterling against the euro has seen a fall in pump prices for British holidaymakers when compared with 2011.

The countries offering the best value for motorists were Luxembourg and Andorra, but drivers to Italy will find the cost of a litre of diesel up 10 per cent on last year to £1.49 per litre.

Drivers of diesel cars will find the cost of filling up cheaper on the Continent than in Britain.

“Our research shows that UK holidaymakers are not deterred by the high fuel prices they will find when driving in some countries this summer,” said Andrew Brown, the Post Office’s head of travel money.

“However, it also revealed that some advance route planning with petrol prices in mind could help them cut costs.

"A good tip is to fill up before leaving the UK if travelling to France or Belgium in a petrol car, divert into Luxembourg if travelling south through eastern France or detour into Andorra en route to Spain.

If you are driving a diesel car, fill up as soon as you arrive on the Continent as it is much cheaper in Europe than in the UK.”

Take a break where the spa's the star

From taking the waters in Bath and Cheltenham to diamond facials, hot tubs and manicures for men, the art of pampering in the UK has come a long way.

British spas have come a long way since "taking the waters" came into fashion in towns such as Bath and Cheltenham. Now every hotel worth its Dead Sea salts has a treatment room, if not a full-blown Roman tepidarium. Many treatments are tailored to our busy lives. Champneys (0843 316 2222; champneys. com) offers a Bamboo Massage for people who slouch at their desk all day (£65), while the Blue Harbour Spa at Wyndham Grand London (020-7823 3000; wyndhamgrandlondon.co.uk) has a VOYA Environmental Defence facial (£75), to combat pollution. Specialist booking agents include Health and Fitness Travel (0845 544 1936; healthandfitnesstravel.com) and spabreaks.com (0800 043 6600).

Of course don't just take our word for it have a look at the following famous quotes:

"To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear." Buddha

"If the body be feeble, the mind will not be strong." Thomas Jefferson, US President

"Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop." Ovid, Roman Poet

Third of London hotel rooms empty for Olympics

London’s hotels are facing a dramatic loss in profits with a third of rooms unsold over the summer after tourists have been put off by the Olympics, a survey has found.

"Third of London hotel rooms empty for Olympics as 'normal' tourists stay away"

The boom to the economy that the Government hoped the Games would bring to the capital appears to become a bust with tens of thousands to tourists spurning the hiked prices, congestion and heightened security.

While bookings for July and August are down by 35 per cent on last year other European capitals appear to be prospering from London’s gloom.

French ministers, who lost the Olympic bid to Britain, might be quietly rubbing their hands with glee not only for dodging the £10 billion Games bill but also with a 50 per cent rise in tourism bookings. Similarly Barcelona and Berlin have seen their tourist numbers soar by 100 per cent over the summer.

Part of London’s problems have been caused by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) block booking 40,000 rooms over the period for officials and their families. Hotels then increased prices for remaining rooms only for Locog to return a fifth of the rooms earlier this year.

This has distorted the market place commented a spokesperson of JacTravel, whose customers include travel agents and hotel websites.

They told BBC Radio Four Today programme that Locog had said the “prices are going to stand up and people are going to come” but this has not happened.

“If you lose a third of your availability and believe that that’s sold for you in the market place then that’s probably going to change your approach to how your price your remaining stock. The fact is that that stock did not sell when you look at our data with seven weeks left to go in market.”

JacTravel found that four-star London hotels were charging up to £415 per night which was nearly four times normal prices.

A survey by Hotel.com found that prices in London have increased by 104 per cent with the average room costing £213 this summer.

The JacTravel spokesperson added that “normal tourism” in other Olympic capitals such had Sydney, Beijing and Barcelona had dropped significantly during the Games and “took some time to recover”.

Weymouth, Dorset: the jewel of the south for the 2012 Olympics

Visitors to Weymouth for the sailing at the 2012 Olympics will be won over by its wonderful beaches, wild coastal walks and rich history.

When it comes to seaside holidays it is location that counts; and Weymouth, wrapped around by Dorset’s Jurassic Coast – England’s first and only natural World Heritage Site – basks in a setting unmatched by any other south coast resort.

Visitors have been flocking to its golden sands ever since 1789, when Mad King George III took his first royal dip in the briny, using a newfangled bathing machine – a kind of beach hut on wheels. Although he didn’t know it, as he emerged from the waves while a band played God Save the King he had put Weymouth on the map, and turned sea bathing into a national pastime.

With its elegant Georgian seafront, best sandcastle beach ever and a harbour deep enough for Channel Island ferries, Weymouth is no run-of-the-mill seaside resort. Radipole Lake – an RSPB reserve of whispering reeds and flights of wildfowl – reaches into the heart of the town, and at Portland Harbour is the National Sailing Academy, where the main Olympic events will be staged.

All 4,600 tickets for the main viewpoint at the Nothe Gardens were snapped up long ago. You could watch from the Smugglers’ Inn at Osmington Mills or Furzy Cliffs at Bowleaze Cove, but all you will see are small white triangles.

Far better to head for the two giant screens on the beach, which have an accompanying commentary so you will know exactly what is going on. There’s enough room for 15,000 people and it is free, although you will be clicked in through the turnstiles to avoid overcrowding.

Rising behind the Olympic village is England’s Gibraltar – the Isle of Portland. An island in name only, this four-mile slab of solid limestone is joined to the mainland by Chesil Beach. It’s a weird place, bleak and windswept, with a prison at one end and a lighthouse at the other. Half of London, including St Paul’s Cathedral and the Banqueting House in Whitehall, was dug from its quarries.

Peregrine falcons patrol its cliffs and the tidal race streaming south from Portland Bill is one of the most powerful in Europe, flinging up steep, confused waves that come at you from every direction. From the New Ground car park near the Portland Heights Hotel you can follow an eight-mile coastal walk right around the island with glorious views.

Westward lies Chesil Beach, one of the geological wonders of the world, a giant bank of sea-heaped pebbles connecting Portland to the mainland at Wyke Regis and then sweeping away in an unbroken curve with hardly so much as a beach hut to spoil its tawny symmetry.

Events
Olympic torch relay in Dorset: July 12-14
Olympic sailing: July 29-Aug 11
Paralympic sailing: September 1-6
Spirit of the Sea: Weymouth & Portland Maritime Festival, June 30 to July 15. Two weeks of sport, cultural events and a spectacular carnival procession coinciding with the Dorset Seafood Festival (01305 208714; spiritofthesea.org.uk).

UK Holidays Are A Great Idea

According to a recent article by Direct Travel Insurance, the UK is a great place to take a holiday if you want a relaxing break without the hassle of jumping on a plan abroad.

Has there ever been so much to see and do in Britain as this year? Probably not! Britons don’t only have the fantastic occasions of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics to give them a reason to explore our beautiful country, but a host of other events too.

They go on to give 5 great reasons to take a ‘staycation’ and make the most of brilliant Britain. Taking out a UK travel insurance policy will provide peace of mind to the Britons that they are covered in the event of a problem.

So instead of flying abroad, why not:

1.   Book a country break or city stay to make the most of the four-day-weekend giving Britons a Diamond Jubilee double bank holiday from 2 – 5 June. It’s too good an opportunity to miss.

2.   Catch the Olympic buzz early by seeing the Torch Relay as it winds throughout the country from Land’s End on 18 May to London on 27 July. During the Games event will be taking place as far afield as Weymouth (sailing), Broxbourne (canoeing) and Hadleigh (mountain biking.)

3.   Enjoy movie mania at the new Making of Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour near Watford, with iconic film sets ranging from Dumbledore’s office to the Weasleys’ kitchen and the Great Hall. Or head to Scotland for the spectacular scenery featured in the epic battles and mystical legends of the new Disney Pixar film Brave, out in June.

4.   Mark the centenary of the Titanic in Belfast with a trip to the new multi-million pound visitor attraction recounting the tragedy of the ill-fated liner. Visitors can relive the story of the doomed ship with full-scale reconstructions, dark rides and special effects.

5.   Pull on your hiking boots and head to Wales, where 850 miles of coastline have just opened up to walkers. This makes Wales one of the only countries on earth where visitors can walk along the entire length of the coastline on marked trails.

Extra trains put on as Britain prepares for Jubilee getaway

The countdown to the great British Bank Holiday getaway has begun, with millions of people set to be on the move - either heading to London for the Jubilee festivities or making the most of the holiday to get away.

Heathrow Airport expects to handle 2.9 million passengers in the next two weeks, with 780,000 overseas travellers due to arrive at the west London airport between today and bank holiday Tuesday.

And UK travel organisation ABTA has predicted that as many as many six million Britons will be taking advantage of the four-day weekend with a holiday abroad or in the UK over the period June 2-5.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will not be without their travel restrictions, but across the country, railways and roads are reducing their planned improvement works as much as possible.

Although the Highways Agency has suspended roadworks on some English motorways and A roads, some restrictions will stay in place for safety reasons.

Unlike most weekends, London Underground will be running near normal services over the bank holiday weekend, with only the Waterloo & City line not operating and with part-suspensions on the London Overground line.

Many main line train companies that run services to and from London will be providing additional trains or carriages at times to cope with those visiting the capital for Jubilee events.

The rail industry said the vast majority of passengers travelling over the bank holiday weekend would experience no disruption because of engineering work.

But buses will replace trains on some routes. One service affected is the Stansted Express which takes passengers between Liverpool Street station at Stansted Airport in Essex.

There will be a reduced service on this route from Saturday until bank holiday Tuesday.

Around four million people plan to holiday in the UK over the weekend, according to ABTA, with another two million going abroad.

The Highways Agency said around 275 miles of roadworks will be completed before the weekend and a further 43 miles of works would be lifted from 6am on Friday to midnight on Tuesday.

Among works still in place will be those on the M1 between junctions 10 and 13 in the Luton area of Bedfordshire.

The AA and traffic information company Trafficmaster said the main getaway is likely to be on Friday afternoon and on Saturday.

Busy spots are likely to include the A303 from the M3 through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset; the M5 in the West Country and the M6 through Staffordshire and Cheshire into Lancashire.

AA patrolman of the year Andy Smith said: 'Our research shows that many people will be staying closer to home to celebrate the Jubilee, so most traffic congestion is going to be quite localised.

'However, the main 'getaway' routes will still be very busy this Friday and Saturday, so if you are heading off, allow extra time for your journey or avoid the peak period.'

The survey also showed that 14 per cent said a road near them was being closed for a street party or a similar Jubilee event.

Among Londoners, this figure rose to 20 per cent, but only 3 per cent of Scots said there would be road closures in their area.

Half a million Britons to join celebrations in London

More than half a million Britons are expected to visit London over the weekend to take part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Association of Train Operating Companies said around 500,000 people would be travelling to London by rail, while a further 30,000 are due to travel with coach operator National Express.

Many rail companies will be providing additional trains and carriages to cope with the increased demand, while the majority of engineering work has been put on hold.

One route that will be affected is the Stansted Express service between the Essex airport and Liverpool Street station.

National Express said its busiest departure points for trips to the capital would be Bristol, Birmingham and Bournemouth.

Hundreds of thousands more will visit the capital from overseas – Heathrow alone is expecting to handle 780,000 overseas travellers between today and next Tuesday.

The west London airport is laying out red carpets in its arrivals halls and handing out Union flags to passengers.

Eurostar has also reported a 30 per cent rise in bookings over the weekend, with up to 30,000 passengers a day travelling between Britain and the Continent.

Not all Britons will be staying in the country to celebrate the Jubilee, however. Around two million are expected to head abroad during the coming days, with 115,000 due to fly from Heathrow on Friday. The most popular destinations for departing travellers are Dubai, Amsterdam, Chicago, New York and Dublin, according to the Association of British Travel Agents.

Meanwhile, Transport for London has warned motorists to avoid central London throughout the weekend, while a number of bus routes will be diverted due to road closures.

"Central London will be very busy throughout the weekend and everyone intending to be in central London should use public transport, plan their journeys ahead and check before they travel,” said London's Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy. "Road closures and bus diversions will mean that some people have to travel in different ways - particularly on the Sunday. Due to a number of road and bridge closures, motorists are advised particularly to avoid central London for all but essential journeys on that day.”

The London Underground will be running a complete service, although a few parts of the London Overground will be closed.

Britain's hotels shake off Fawlty Towers reputation

Britain’s hotels – often stereotyped as dowdy and unwelcoming – have finally shaken off their Fawlty Towers reputation, new research has shown.

An analysis of more than eight years’ worth of hotel reviews, by the travel website TripAdvisor, has revealed a significant improvement in the quality of Britain’s hotels and guesthouses.

According to the website, Britain’s hotels currently have an average rating of 4.09 out of five – up from a low of 3.48 in 2004 – placing them for the first time above the global average.

The collective average rating is also higher than that of hotels in the US, France, Spain and Germany.
The website said that the biggest factor behind the rise was improved service and cleanliness, areas where Basil Fawlty’s fictional Torquay guesthouse was notoriously poor.

British hotels currently boast an average rating of 4.23 for service and 4.32 for cleanliness, up from 3.29 and 3.42, respectively, in 2004.

A spokesperson for TripAdvisor for Business, said: “Hotel and b&b owners have clearly been listening to the feedback they have received, and used it to improve the service they provide.”

The website’s research also suggested that Cumbria’s hotels offers the best experience for visitors. Its hotels and b&bs have an average rating of 4.3, making it Britain’s most high-rated county, ahead of Cornwall (4.28), Northumberland (4.26), Devon (4.24) and Somerset (4.22).

Is Cornwall Greenest Holiday Destination?

Cornwall remains high on the list of favourite UK holiday destinations. Three Cornish resorts featured in the top 10 British resorts in the TripAdvisor Awards, a Which? holiday survey put two Cornish resorts amongst Britain's top ten favourite seaside towns, the British Travel Awards recently voted Cornwall the best UK Holiday County or Region and Sunday Times readers voted Cornwall their Favourite UK Country Escape.

Little surprise then that two of the most popular of Haven Holidays' 35 UK family holiday parks are Riviere Sands near Hayle and Perran Sands near Perranporth. Riviere Sands enjoys an enviable position with direct access to the South West Path and stunning views across the Hayle estuary to St Ives whilst some 26 miles further north along the coast path, Perran Sands is set amidst Cornwall's largest dune system overlooking the long stretch of Perran Beach and perfect for surfing.

Families and couples travel from all over the UK to holiday here each year, many returning time after time drawn by the gorgeous scenery, beaches and local attractions as well the wide choice of facilities, sports, activities and entertainment on the parks. There's always something to do - whether it's introducing the kids to fencing, getting involved in 'Messy Mornings' with your toddler, a round of Adventure Golf, a swim in an heated leisure pool or just sitting back and enjoying the entertainment.

But for General Manager June Donnery, who looks after both parks, one of the most important aspects of running park holidays is to ensure that it operates with minimal impact on the environment.

'So many people have voted for Cornwall in so many different holiday surveys and awards we truly believe it's our duty to make sure we can welcome visitors without damaging what it is they come here to enjoy.' June is passionate about ensuring that the eco-credentials of both parks are an integral part of everything she does.

Both parks have held a David Bellamy Conservation Award Perran Sands ten years Riviere Sands 5 years and both hold the prestigious 'Gold' Green Tourism Business Scheme award. For larger businesses this means meeting significant standards across a wide range of criteria from recycling waste and minimising utilities to working alongside local communities and keeping visitors informed about local flora and fauna.

A self-confessed sustainability geek, June is keen to encourage her team to get involved in green projects too. Before the current holiday season started Team Members at Riviere Sands carried out a litter pick on the Gwithian Towns and collected a staggering 45 bags of rubbish from this are and the beachfront.

And everyone is expected to get involved in the annual Big Green Weekend that provides a real show-case for their eco-endeavours, with all sorts of 'green' activities that involve holidaymakers and the local community as well as team members. From green fancy dress and recycled sculpture competitions to guided walks across the dunes led by Park Ranger Sarah Taylor a combination of fun activities and more serious events highlight the parks' ethos when it comes to the environment.

Continuing investment in both parks ensures that the product remains fresh and exciting for visitors - but June insists that the environment should be taken into consideration with any new building projects.

This year GBP 1.5million has been spent on a new touring facility. 'Camping and caravanning holidays have such a low carbon footprint,' says June. 'It's a fantastic way to get really close to nature and spend time outdoors and we wanted to make it as convenient and comfortable as possible for our touring guests.'

The new shower and washroom blocks have been designed to blend in with the sand dunes so the visual impact is as modest as their environmental footprint. Curved roofs are covered in grass and designed to harvest rainwater to make them self-watering. Water for the showers is solar heated and the exterior is clad in cedar which will fade over time to a silvery-grey to blend in with the natural environment.

Energy efficient under-floor heating, rooflights to maximise the natural light and high efficiency condenser boilers ensure that the buildings work to best environmental standards as well as looking attractive. Inside, the interior has been quirkily designed to make one block redolent of the camper vans much loved by local surfers whilst the other captures a 'beach hut' feel with lots of seaside brightly coloured beach hut cubicles.

What's more, Perran will be the first Cornwall Holiday Park to feature geo-domes as an alternative accommodation for touring guests. Following the success of their yurts (they have four) and a new village of safari tents, June commissioned a handful of geo-dome tents, complete with separate sleeping pods for children. Similar in shape to the famous domes of the Eden Project, the new tents will be fully furnished in 'shabby chic' style with a corner sofa and comfortable beds.

The 'seaside' theme continues at Riviere Sands where the new Cornish Cafe is decorated in natural timber cladding with mural of St.Ives bay- and stocks plenty of local produce, with Cornish cream teas and Cornish ice cream. It even features hand carved Cornish pasties as door handles - with a local artist commissioned for the job.

London Underground: Tube map unveiled

Tracey Emin is the latest artist to decorate the pocket Tube map; her picture will be printed 18 million times.

Notable artists have long decorated the cover pages of Tube maps distributed to tourists and locals in London Underground stations. Emin’s map is the sixteenth in a series of such specially commissioned covers, all of which form part of the Art on the Underground initiative that integrates contemporary art into Tube passengers’ journeys.

The first artist to have their work promoted on a Tube map was Emma Kay in 2004, with subsequent designs coming from artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Michael Landy, Eva Rothschild and David Shrigley.

Some 18 million maps will be printed with Emin’s design, making it the most prolific edition of the map to date, and it will be available from June and over the duration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The design shows a scrawled bird at rest on a branch that stands in place of the Northern line and features the names of the Central line and east London stations that form the basis of the artist’s commute. Speaking about the reaction she hopes her work evokes, Emin said: “When people look at the Tube map I want them to smile and feel reassured.”

TfL has commended Emin’s creation for adapting “the iconography of the original map to reflect her personal experience of the network and her ideas and experience of place.” Tamsin Dillon, head of Art on the Underground praised the piece as “a moving and unique interpretation of the capital”. Emin was also one of the artists who contributed a design to the official series of 12 Olympic and Paralympic posters.

Britain’s first ‘Wiki-town’

Tourism boost for Wales as Britain’s first ‘Wiki-town’ is launched in historic Monmouth.

The small Welsh town where King Henry V was born in 1387 is about to make history again by becoming the world's first ‘Wikipedia town.’

From tomorrow, visitors to Monmouth, in south-east Wales, will be able to scan barcodes at points of interest, instantly bringing up a Wikipedia page about the landmark on their phones. Hundreds of articles about the life and history of Monmouth will be available online in more than 26 languages, from Hindi to Hungarian.

Around 1,000 different barcodes, plaques and stickers are now displayed on the town’s schools, museums, historical sites and even pubs have signed up, highlighting the history of their establishments.

And while the project is geared at capturing ‘every notable place, person, artefact, flora and fauna’ in the town, some less-historically notable - but equally welcome - articles have been added.

Local businesses such as bakeries have been involved, placing barcodes in their windows linked to articles about the history of baking.

The project - dubbed ‘Monmouthpedia’ - has been developed by Wikimedia UK over the last six months, helped by the local council's installation of town-wide free Wi-Fi.

Local residents and businesses have created and edited articles about the town, while other volunteers have been translating them.

More than 450 new articles about Monmouth have been added to Wikipedia and nearly 150 existing articles have been improved in the past six months.

Czech speakers can now learn about Monmouth Castle in their native tongue, while Fijian Hindi speakers can check out articles on the Monmouth Cricket Club, Methodist Church or the local Kings Head Hotel.

Scholars of lesser-known languages such as Esperanto or Latin will also have their pick of Monmouth-related articles.

Monmouthshire County Council's chief officer for regeneration and culture, Kellie Beirne, said the project had already boosted tourism.

The town was chosen for its rich cultural history, says Wikimedia UK's communications organiser Stevie Benton.

He said: ‘It's really captured people's imaginations in ways we hadn't expected.'

‘If everyone shares the stories of their local area, we'll have a much clearer understanding of the world we live in and that's a powerful thing.'

Roger Bamkin, a director of Wikimedia UK, said, 'We're delighted that Monmouth is becoming the world's first Wikipedia town.

‘Both the quality and quantity of the new Monmouth Wikipedia content is outstanding, reflecting the rich cultural, historical and natural heritage of the town.

'At last foreign visitors can not only read information in their own language, but they can edit it too.’

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said he was looking forward to seeing other towns following suit.

Diamond Jubilee to spark UK holidays frenzy

UK holidays will be on the agenda for many people next month when the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations create a four-day window for breaks.

A report by the Telegraph has claimed the long weekend will see £10 billion added to the country's economy, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to arrive at holiday spots from both the UK and abroad.

Restaurants, attractions and shops are likely to be busy, with much of the activity focused on London.

With this in mind, people might be wise to take holidays in Sussex, Kent, Essex or other counties close to the capital. But that is not to say there will not be plenty of tourists heading for beautiful locations such as Devon and Yorkshire in order to soak up a relaxed atmosphere as the nation marks 60 years of its monarch's reign.

Santander recently found the price of hotels in the UK is as much as 81 per cent higher on the Jubilee weekend, so campsites and caravans could provide the best value accommodation.

England in top ten for world’s best beaches

Keep Britain Tidy today announced the results of the annual Blue Flag awards, with 79 English beaches receiving the globally-recognised award this year – that’s nine more Blue Flags than 2011, guaranteeing more visitors peace of mind that their trip to the seaside will be clean and litter-free.

From Tyne and Wear to Torbay, beaches around our country’s coastline have been rewarded for their top-notch facilities and high standard of water quality. The results mean England is ranked in the world’s top 10 countries for having the most Blue Flag beaches out of the 46 countries taking part in the Blue Flag scheme.

Flying the flag for England’s seaside resorts in 2012 is Thanet in Kent with nine Blue Flags, followed by Torbay and Cornwall with five each. But the awards aren’t confined to the south of the country – beaches in Northumbria, Yorkshire and along the East of England coastline will be flying the Blue Flag this year.

In addition to the 79 beaches awarded a Blue Flag, 99 beaches around England have received Keep Britain Tidy’s Quality Coast Award, with the Isle of Wight leading the way with 11 awards, followed by Torbay with 10 awards and Scarborough with eight awards.

In total, England will boast an impressive 142 award-winning beaches in 2012 (with 36 beaches flying both the Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award).

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which is responsible for the Blue Flag scheme in England and the Quality Coast Awards, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that England has more Blue Flag’s this year and with a total of 142 beaches around England receiving Blue Flags and Quality Coast Awards, what better way to holiday in this country than to visit one of the award-winning beaches.

“Winning beaches along our coastline ensure high standards of excellence for visitors. These high standards are testament to the hard work carried out by beach managers throughout the year in order to provide clean and safe beaches for everyone to enjoy, whether you live on the coast or are a visitor.”

The number of beaches receiving a Blue Flag or Quality Coast Award in 2012 proves that our shores continue to shine, offering residents, day-trippers and tourists alike well-maintained and well-managed places to visit.
